School Curriculum
The school curriculum undergoes continuous development supervised by the principal in cooperation with the faculty. This process assures parents that the instructional program is adequate, current, and geared to the academic skills needed for living in today's society.
Generally speaking, the curriculum at each grade level consists of Religion, Reading, Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies, Computer, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish.
The choice of new textbooks is made by teachers with the approval of Archdiocesan curriculum guidelines. All texts are approved by the Office of Schools, Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The math textbook can be viewed on-line with extra support questions to enrich the student.
Religion
The primary purpose of a Catholic school is to include religion as the core of the curriculum. The current religious education program reflects the authentic spirit of the Second Vatican Council. The teachings of the Church reflected in the General Catechetical Directory, To Teach as Jesus Did, and the Basic Teachings for Catholic Religious Education, are incorporated into the Brown Roa, Harcourt, Silver Burdett and Benzinger Religion Series used in the school. This program seeks to present our faith through doctrine, Church tradition, worship, sacramental experience and Christian action dimensions.
The series is adapted to each grade level according to the spiritual, emotional, psychological and physical development of each student in the maturation process.
- The children plan and participate in the Liturgy on a regular basis.
- Religion is taught 150 minutes per week by the homeroom teacher. The influence of the teacher's role modeling and dedicated service combined theology serve as Christian guidelines to the students.
- Primary attention is given to the celebration of Liturgy and the Sacraments.
Student Services: Special Needs
Classroom teachers diagnose student needs and provide classroom extension activities. Classroom teachers may refer students for initial testing at St. John Vianney in math and reading. Students meeting criteria may be referred to the public school in their school district for a complete battery of tests and a multi-disciplinary evaluation (M-Team evaluation.) Lists of the following are available in the school office:
- Current outside school resources such as Cardinal Stritch Reading Clinic
- Outside school specialists and tutors
- Classroom teachers who provide private tutoring after school and summers
Reading Specialist
Classroom teachers, parents and students may request an assessment by the reading specialist. The Reading Specialist works with students to provide early intervention and ongoing help to beginning readers. In addition, students in first grade who have not learned phonics are taught with materials from the Jolly Phonics program used in kindergarten.

Classroom, parents and teachers are welcome to meet with the guidance counselor. The guidance counselor teaches career exploration for grades 5-8, Christian behaviors for grades K - 8, and guides students in life issues within families and/or between friends. Her door is always open.
