St. John Vianney school offers four bands:  Beginner (4th grade), Intermediate (5th & 6th grade), Advanced (7th & 8th grade) and Jazz band (selected students).  Students are arranged based on their grade in school.

The opportunity to take private band lessons is provided for students in grades 4-8.  Lessons are arranged with the band instructor during the regular school day and group practice is held after school.  The program includes one 20 or 25 minute private or semi-private lesson and one group class weekly.

Band students perform during the Christmas concert, the school play and at an end-of-year concert.

The Fall Fest Band Concert, featuring current students along with returning high school and parent/relative instrument players is Wednesday, October 27 at 7pm in the Activity Center. Parish members and guests are invited to attend.

Instruction

The Essential Elements 2000 band method is the primary method of instruction.  Other materials to supplement the goal to produce a well-rounded performer are provided.  The year is divided into two semesters with 14 weeks of instruction.  Private and semi-private (2 or 3 students) lessons are offered during the school day (scheduled by the homeroom teacher) and group band is held after school.

Beginner Band (4th grade)

Students beginning in band have only private/semi-private lessons from September through January.  In January, group lessons begin.  Group lessons start Wednesday, January 2 from 2:50 - 3:30 in the Presentation Hall.  Beginning band students do not participate in the Christmas concert but rather have a separate concert later in the year for parents.

Intermediate Band (5-6th grade)

Intermediate group band practices on Tuesdays, from 2:50 - 3:30 p.m. in the Presentation Hall.

Advanced Band (7-8 grade)

Advanced group band practices on Thursdays, from 2:50 - 3:30 p.m. in the Presentation Hall.

Jazz Band (selected students)

Jazz Band group lessons are held 7:10 a.m. - 7:50 a.m. on Wednesdays in the Presentation Hall.

Starting in 6th grade, students are eligible for Solo & Ensemble competitions in the spring.  Information regarding this event will be distributed by the band teacher.

Instruments

Instruments may be rented from any music store.  Instrument demonstrations are held in early September during the new parent meeting.  Contact the school secretary for information regarding the Band - New Parent Meeting.  Students are required to have a music stand, music book, folder and pencil.

Practice

Beginning band students need to practice 15 minutes, 6 days per week minimum.  As students progress, they will need 30 minutes daily.
