Participation in competitive athletics is open to students in grades 5-8 in cooperation with the SJV Athletic Association. Seasonal sponsored sports include: fall - boy’s and girl’s volleyball; winter - boy’s and girl’s basket ball; spring – boy’s and girl’s tennis, golf and track. The SJV Extra-Curricular Eligibility Policy and Athletic Association Handbook contain further details regarding athletic programming at SJV.
The primary purpose of the SJV Athletic Association is to organize, support and encourage athletic programs for parish and school registered boys and girls. Athletic programs are governed by a twelve member board elected by parishioners during annual spring elections. All athletic activities are under the direction of the Pastor or his delegates, the school principal, and the parish Director of Christian Formation.
Band
The opportunity to take private band lessons is provided for students in grades 4-8. The band lessons are arranged with the Band Instructor during the school day. Group rehearsals are held after school.
Children’s Choir
Students in grades K5-8 are eligible to participate in the SJV Children’s Choir. The children sing for parish Masses and special occasions. Rehearsals are held after school.
Drama
The SJV Fine Arts Department (division of H&S) annually sponsors a drama production in the late spring. The production is primarily composed of students in grades 6-8.The annual production encourages students to attain exposure, understanding and experience in fine arts.
Forensics
Forensics is an individual and team competition in various categories of speech. Students in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate. Forensic season is from November through March.
Graduation
The Graduation School Mass and evening ceremony are planned in coordination with the pastor, Liturgy department, middle school staff and school administration. Graduation related events, activities and tasks such as the video, breakfast, memory book, dance, etc… are organized by the parents in collaboration with the school administration.
Graduates are annually recognized for their accomplishments during their careers at SJV. Academic and effort awards include the Presidential Academic Achievement Award and Outstanding Achievement through Outstanding Effort Award. The Presidential Academic award requires students to earn an average of a 3.5 grade point average throughout sixth, seventh and the first three quarters of eighth grade as well as score at least at the 85th percentile or higher in Math or Reading on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Leadership, citizenship and spirituality awards include the AnnEvanich Jaeger Memorial Scholarship, Confidence to Take Action Award and Father Lipscomb Award. Athletic awards include the John E. Sandstrom Award and the Kloza award that recognize students for their athletic excellence as well as attitude and personal characteristics consistent with the SJV Athletic program.
Junior Great Books
Students in grades 4-7 are eligible to participate in a reading program that offers children the opportunity to read, analyze and discuss valuable and enriching reading materials.
Mass Servers
Girls and boys in grades 6-8 are eligible to serve as Alter Servers for Masses. Students in grades 7-8 may be asked to serve for funerals and other Liturgical events during the school day.
Math Club
Students of intermediate and middle school age are eligible to participate in a program designed to enhance their math skills.
Newspaper(Vianney Views)
All students are eligible to participate in the SJV School newspaper,Vianney Views. Students create and write articles on a variety of topics concerning SJV students.
Scouts
Scouting programs are available for boys and girls in grades K-8.For more information please see Scout page on School Website
Song Leaders
Students in grades K5-8 are eligible to participate at school Masses as Song Leaders who help lead the congregation in song. Rehearsal for Song Leaders occurs during the school day.
Strings
Students in grades 1-8 may take private strings lessons. Strings lessons are arranged with the Strings Instructor. Group rehearsals are held before or after school.
