School Board

"I wish to stress that parents cannot be disinterested in the education of their children, but it is necessary that they become even more aware that the school does not exempt them from their mission, but aids them in fulfilling it; and that they are the first educators of their children. Therefore, the harmonious collaboration between family and school is indispensable: Both united in the impassioned task of forming men and women." Pope John Paul II, 1983

School Board Minutes

General Information

A School Board is required and defined by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.   The Board is strictly and advisory body providing information and opinions to the principal and pastor.

School Board is a policy making body whose responsibility is to:
  • Develop and define policies which shall govern the operation of educational programs at St. John Vianney School.
  • Ensure a cooperative working relationship with the pastor, principal, parish council and school families.
  • Promote and monitor principal's implementation of those policies. '07-08 School Board Survey

The concept is that of a free standing body, governed by its own constitution, ultimately accountable to the Parish Council.

The SJV School Board continues to provide excellence in education and to compete in the Brookfield area market with affordable tuition while promoting spiritual knowledge through witness to the Gospel message.

Function

The functions of the School Board include the following:
  • To be responsible for educational activities of the school.
  • To establish and recommend policy for the operation of school educational programs.
  • To assist in the development of long range plans for educational programs of the school.
  • To evaluate and approve the school education budget and to submit proposal to the Parish Council for approval.
All local, as well as Archdiocesan policies are available for reading in the school office. New policies are communicated to school families throughout the school year.

Committees

School Board committees are comprised of school board and parent members.  Committee meetings are held monthly, or as needed, and reports are given at the monthly School Board meeting.  The School Board has four standing committees:
  • Advancement:  This committee works closely with the Home and School Association Public Relations Committee to market  St. John Vianney School.  Advancement concentrates on enrollment/recruitment marketing to new families, holding open houses, and updating school information on websites and print publications.
    • Development:  Under the direction of Advancement Committee, the Development Committee concentrates on obtaining third source funding, creating a grandparent program and developing alumni relations.  Development committee works closely with Parish Stewardship and Planned Giving committees.
  • Finance:  Prepare and manage the school operating budget to maintain reasonable tuition for school families while maintaining and/or enhancing educational programs.
  • Long Range Planning:  LRP is responsible for surveying parents and teachers every three years to identify areas of growth and advancement of St. John Vianney School.  The results of the survey are distributed to parents along with action plans to address the areas of growth potential at the school.
  • Policy:  Establish and recommend policy for the operation of school educational programs.
School Board maintains liaison relationships with parish committees and boards:  Christian Formation, Home and School Association, Parish Council, Stewardship, Buildings and Grounds, Athletics, and Technology.

Members

Members are nominated to school board annually in the spring through the Parish Council discernment process.  Three members are elected from the Parish community each year for a three-year term.

Meetings

School Board meetings are normally held the 3rd Monday of the month during the school year at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center.  Check the parish calendar for date, time and location confirmation.  Community members are welcome to attend/address School Board during Open Forum which is held at every school board monthly meeting.
