Christian Education and Formation Ministries

 
Advisors, High School
Purpose: To lead small groups in high school and Confirmation faith formation.
 
Athletic Board
Purpose: Direct an athletic program for youth of the parish in grades 5 - 12 and their families that fosters Christian values and promotes community
Activities: Coordinate all aspects of the SJV athletic program - concessions, coaching, tournaments and gym scheduling and supervision. Current athletic programs include: volleyball, basketball and track.
 
Athletic Coaches
Purpose: To provide knowledgeable leadership for our athletic program.
Activities: Coaches are needed for grades 5 through 8 in basketball, volleyball and track from August through May.
 
Athletic Program Volunteers
Purpose: To assist the Athletic Department with its many duties.
Activities: Varied positions and time commitments, to include gym supervision, concession stand workers, tournament organizers and team managers, among others.
 
Baptism Preparation
Purpose: Prepare parents for baptism of a child.
Activities: Leader couples present a video series and lead further discussion. These classes are offered 11 times per year.
 
Best of Friends
Purpose: Respite care for caregivers who take care of family members with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Activities: On Tuesdays and Fridays helpers are needed to provide lunch, socialize and direct crafts and activities.
 
Catechists
Purpose: Volunteers serve as teachers of the faith to students in grades K4-8.
Activities: Training is provided. Program year runs September to May.
Contact will be made in spring for the following school year.
 
Catechists - Junior High
Purpose: To lead small groups in junior high faith formation
 
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Purpose: Children age 4 through grade 4 are dismissed from Mass to hear the Scripture at a children's level.
Activities: Volunteers leave with the children during the Mass and lead them in song, prayer and reflection. The volunteers return with the children at the presentation of the gifts.
 
Christian Formation Board>
Purpose: This discerned board defines and develops the policies that govern the operation of the parish Christian Formation programs.
Activities: To include long-range planning, social activities and new member registration
 
Christian Formation - High School
Purpose: Faith formation 9th grade through 11th grade Confirmation.
Activities: Meetings are Sundays as scheduled by Advisors.
 
Christian Formation - Junior High School
Purpose: Christian Formation of Jr. High students and leader of personal faith groups.
Activities: Instructional classroom work, service projects and social events.
 
Confirmation - Adult
Purpose: To prepare adults, age 19 and up, for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Activities: Meets twice per month, October to Pentecost to gain an adult understanding of faith.
 
Confirmation Retreat Team - Year I and II
Purpose: To be strong faith leaders on high school confirmation retreats.
 
Continuing Faith - Senior High School
Purpose: To continue informal faith formation to youth after Confirmation.
 
Global Youth Mission
Purpose: International ministry opportunity to interact with people, their life, their customs and their faith. An Archdiocesan sponsored event.
Activities: Activities include a wide range of experiences such as teaching Bible school, doing simple home repairs and construction.
 
Grief Ministry
Purpose: Give support to parishioners who have lost a loved one.
Activities: Contact the grieving family and provide the offer for prayer and support.
 
Home and School
Purpose: Give An organization working to enhance the educational and spiritual environment of St. John Vianney School.
Activities: School fund-raising events, communications, enrichment, resource management, socials, spiritual events.
 
Initiation of Children
Purpose: A program that follows the RCIA, but focuses on children or youth in preparing them for any or all of the Sacraments of Initiation.
Activities: A family evaluation is done and a custom program is designed.
 
Library Volunteers - Parish
Purpose: Staff the Parish Library on Sunday mornings during the school year.
Activities: Shelving of books.
 
Men’s Ministry
Purpose: An interested group of men who get together to discuss readings for the upcoming Sunday liturgies.
Activities: Interested individuals meet once a week in small groups for a Gospel reading discussion. Then, as a large group, join together to share their thoughts. Periodically, the group will hold social functions, such as dinners that include spouses.
 
Metro Bible Study
Purpose: To further the education of scripture via a Catholic Bible study group.
Activities: Meets at Holy Apostles on Wednesday evenings or SJV on Thursday mornings during the school year for Bible Study.
 
M.O.M.S. (Ministry of Mothers Sharing)
Purpose: To allow stay-at-home moms to connect with each other and themselves spiritually.
Activities: A 6-week series and discussion. Babysitting is included.
 
Peer Ministers
Purpose: High school teens help with staffing and support of Teen Activity Center Day.
Activities: Ministers offer faith and leadership support to junior high teens through games and conversation, Wednesday afternoons, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
 
Pre-Marriage Inventory
Purpose: To help engaged couples prepare for the sacrament of marriage.
Activities: Married couples assist engaged couples in taking and discussing the pre-marriage inventory. Training is provided through the archdiocese.
 
Renew
Purpose: Help people share faith in small groups and form a community.
Activities: Meet as frequently as each small group decides. Focus each meeting on a study book, Scripture or topic. Group leaders are always needed to facilitate the meetings.
 
Retreats - Adult
Purpose: Plan and organize the adult retreat held annually in January.
Activities: Beginning in September the team will select a theme, coordinate liturgy, music, social and other activities that will support the retreat.
 
R.I.S.E.N. (Religious Instruction Special Education Needs)
Purpose: To provide Christian Formation for individuals with cognitive disabilities age 3 through adult, either as a supplement to the traditional Christian Formation program or as the primary program.
 
Rite of Christian Formation for Adults (RCIA)
Purpose: Prepare individuals to become Catholics and initiate them into the Church.
Activities: A 9-month process including Sunday morning sessions called “Breaking Open the Word” (mid October through Easter) and Monday evening catechecial sessions held twice per month.
 
St. John Vianney Parish School
Activities: St. John Vianney School welcomes kindergarten through grade 8 students and their parents to formation in Christian values, academic excellence and social awareness.
 
School Board
Purpose: This discerned board defines and develops the policies that govern the operation of the educational programs at the parish school and supports the principal in the implementation of these policies.
Activities: Develop and set the budget; write policies for the school; public relations/communications; long-range planning.
 
School Day Helpers
Purpose: To support the school and its students by assisting in curriculum and administrative areas such as computer class aides, clerical work, library aides and lunchroom monitors.
 
Scouting
Purpose: To provide an educational experience concerned with values. It is designed to build character, physical fitness, practical skills and service.
Activities: Age appropriate activities and field trips.
 
Service - Junior High/High School
Purpose: To provide contacts and reference material for service work and to lead or support service events throughout the year for teenagers in 7th grade through 12th grade.
Activities: Make a Difference Day, Workcamps, church cleaning, etc.
 
Special Needs Ministry
Purpose: Individuals with special needs are invited to be part of the Christian Formation programs.
Activities: To give one-on-one support to meet the special needs (physical, mental or cognitive disability) of an individual as it pertains to the Christian Formation programs in our parish
 
Teen Activity Center Day
Purpose: To provide adult supervision for Teen Activity Center.
Activities: Adults offer their presence for various scheduled Wednesday afternoons, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. throughout the academic year.
 
Theology On Tap
Purpose: A special series for young adults held for 4 weeks during the month of July.
Activities: Young adult committee members are needed to prepare content and be small group leaders.
 
Vacation Bible School
Purpose: For children in grades K4 through 4. This is a one-week Scripture based Bible school held during summer. The theme for each day is related to Catholic teachings and referenced with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Activities: Adult volunteers and students in grade 5 and up are needed for a variety of tasks.
 
Vocations
Purpose: To encourage people to pursue religious vocations.
 
WorkCamp
Purpose: A week-long pilgrimage to serve those who are in need.
Activities: Repairing homes, simple construction, painting, etc. to allow people to remain or return to their homes.
 
Zion Adult Team
Purpose: To provide support to the Zion Core Team through active participation in events and activities planned.
Activities: Faith and social activities through the year, in conjunction with Zion Core Team and youth group.
 
Zion Core Team
Purpose: Youth leaders provide avenues of worship, community, retreats, social and prayer.
Activities: Music, Bible study, conversation, prayer, social activities: handled in meetings, Thursdays, 8:00 p.m.
 
Zion Youth Group
Purpose: To provide avenues of worship, community, retreats, social and prayer.
Activities: Bi-weekly meetings in the Teen Activity Center, Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. Meetings provide music, Bible study, conversation, prayer, and social activities.
